The Anaheim Ducks acquired top 4 defenceman Damon Severson on Sunday morning in exchange for forward Jared McCann.  Severson had been on the Ducks radar for years and they were finally able to land the former Kelowna Rocket defender, reuniting him with his junior teammate Madison Bowey.  With most of Anaheim’s defence core over the age of 30, adding the 24 year old Severson brings some extra youth to the lineup.  He’s already a top four defender and on pace for about 40 points this season in the NHL, which is his breakout year.  He’s a solid all around defender, with a hard shot from the point and plays a physical game.

In McCann, the Ducks lose a solid two way forward who is only 22, but had yet to find his way onto the Anaheim roster.  With the likes of Alexander Kerfoot, Jonas Donskoi, Colton Sissons, and Nick Bonino among others ahead of him on the depth chart, McCann was in stiff competition for a roster spot even next season.  Because the Ducks were so loaded up front, they were able to use McCann to add another young defender to their group of Nurse, Bowey, Hicketts, and Merkley and balance out the lineup.  McCann was acquired in a trade with Chicago just after the 2014 draft, but only played 8 games with the Ducks, all in 2016/2017, where he scored 1 goal.
