It took  overtime in game 1 but the defending Stanley Cup Champions defeated the Calgary Flames 5-4 last night. A relatively unknown 4th line scrub who goes by the name of “Malkin” potted the OT winner which was his second of the game. Lars Eller, Thomas Plekanec and Travis Moen rounded out the scoring for Montreal. Calgary got goals from Stamkos, Leopold, Michalek and the streaking Blake Comeau.

The game was marred by an ugly incident in the 2nd period when Habs forward Max Pacioretty snuck up on Flames D-Man Dennis Wideman and crosschecked him in the face repeatedly John Kordic style. Max was assessed a High Sticking major and a game misconduct but will not face further disciplinary action from the league. Meanwhile, Wideman had facial surgery and is listed day to day.

“I’m shocked and appalled” GM Spike said when asked about the incident. “I’ll probably get fined for this but I’m assuming Max and Shanny are off season golf buddies. If Shanny has no balls then commissioner Ransom needs to step in. The video is clear! Max is a RAT!!!!!!”. Spike then stormed off back to the couch to watch the end of the Pacers-Heat game.

Game 2 goes tonight in Montreal. Ilya Bryzgalov my have played his way into a goaltending controversy. Hedberg was solid all season and has been stellar when needed in the playoffs. Menawhile Bryzgalov has struggled of late, giving up 6 goals in Game 7 to Chicago and now 5 in game 1 to the Habs. “The moon has not been aligned with my celestial being lately”, said Ilya. “I need to talk to my dog and figure all this out.” Calgary’s top line has struggled lately as well with all 3 playing minus hockey again last night and are a combined -12 for the playoffs. So will Calgary shake things for game 2? We know one thing for sure there is no panic in GM Spike, but he’s not afraid to make changes either. A loss in Game 2 will make it an steep climb for the Flames.
